Avangrid Foundation Grants $10,000 to Midcoast Youth Center’s MERRYMEETING HOMELESS YOUTH PROJECT
BATH—Midcoast Youth Center is the grateful beneficiary of a $10,000 grant from the Avangrid Foundation.
The Avangrid Foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization that funds philanthropic investments that primarily impact communities where AVANGRID, Inc. and its subsidiaries operate. Since 2002, the Avangrid Foundation and its predecessors have invested more than $24 million in partnerships that focus on building sustainable, vital and healthy communities; preserving cultural and artistic heritage; advancing education; and improving people’s lives. The Avangrid Foundation is committed to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in the United States.
“This incredibly generous grant will go a long way to supporting nearly 35+ homeless students from Bath to Topsham, including Harpswell and Brunswick,” said Merrymeeting Homeless Outreach Director Donna Verhoeven. “Our needs are great: clothing, transportation, rent, food … COVID-19 has only intensified that need. It’s difficult to express just how grateful we are for this incredible financial support. It’s critical.”
In addition to the grant, another surprise was delivered in the form of $800 for MYC’s “15to30” fundraiser, gathered by employees at Maine Natural Gas in Brunswick. That fundraiser recently met its goal of raising $15,000 that will be matched by a generous, anonymous donor. The employees at Maine Natural Gas saw an opportunity to connect — person-to-person — in supporting MYC.
“That is such a wonderful gift, and so from the heart,” said MYC Executive Director and Founder Jamie Dorr. “It really means a lot to know our youth have this type of support from organizations like Avangrid Foundation and Maine Natural Gas.”
The importance of giving in the ways exhibited by Avangrid and the employees of Maine Natural Gas cannot be understated. MYC is buoyed and inspired in our work, knowing that those who are often the most vulnerable in our youth community have strong supports in place because of that generosity of spirit.
